Equine Veterinary Care in Union City

Our On-Site Barn in Union City

We support our quality of care for our equine patients with the facilities offered through our extensive on-site barn.

For equine patients, we are proud to have 2 horse stalls, an equine stock, and an equine padded surgery room for your horse's care. We also have a small equine round pen outside to allow your horse to graze while they are undergoing shots or exams to help keep them comfortable. This pen is also used to run lame horses as part of our examinations.

Procedures & Treatments

Our equine trained vets at Reelfoot Animal Hospital provide a comprehensive range of services and treatments for hard-working horses and their proud owners including:

  • Equine Wellness, Pre-Purchase & Soundness Evaluations

    Equine Wellness Exams

We give all of our equine patients routine checkups twice each year. At these appointments, our veterinarians will ask about your horse's health history since their last visit and about any health issues you've noticed in the meantime.

Equine nutrition will be discussed in addition to an evaluation of your horse's weight and diet. Finally, any vaccinations or deworming required will be given.

    Pre-Purchase Exams

An equine pre-purchase exam is not designed to tell our clients whether to buy a particular horse, rather it is to offer an overview of the health of the animal so that you can make an informed decision.

Pre-purchase exams provided by our Union City veterinarians can help to identify health concerns in a horse such as heart murmurs, signs of arthritis, unusual bumps and lumps, and more.

Our veterinarians will work with you to ensure that you remain informed about issues that may arise after the purchase of a new horse.

    Soundness Evaluations

Our veterinarians want to keep your horse healthy for their entire life. This means keeping your horse sound for as long as possible. When lameness occurs, our vets are committed to reducing its overall impact. This will keep you in the saddle for longer and will promote the health and wellness of your horse in the meantime.

Every case of lameness will be different. Likewise, the way your horse's condition will be managed will depend on a number of factors. We will spend time assessing your horse from head to toe and create a comprehensive workup so that we can identify the core cause of your horse's lameness and begin appropriate treatment as soon as possible

  • Equine Microchipping

Microchips are small devices that are about the size of a grain of rice. In the microchip is stored a permanent identification number that can be read by a handheld radio frequency detector.

These devices allow for the permanent identification of your horse in order to help prevent theft and aid in the recovery of your horses when lost due to disasters. These devices also make the sale of your horse much easier to verify and will serve as proof that your animal has undergone any mandatory or claimed health treatment according to the laws of your state.

  • Surgery

    • Dental
    • Minor Ocular

There is a range of conditions that can fall within the umbrella of equine internal medicine. This includes GI tract issues, respiratory infections neurological disorders, blood system problems, digestive disorders, cardiac conditions and the care for newborn foals.

Internal medicine conditions could also affect the animal's liver, muscles, kidneys, bladder, or neurologic system.

Our veterinarians use a range of diagnostic technologies both on-site and in our veterinary facility. We are equipped to provide your horse with the care they need for your equine friend's internal health and well-being.

  • Equine Dentistry & Odontoplasty (Floating)

Horses can suffer from a number of dental disorders that may affect their ability to eat properly in addition to their performance, overall health and their well-being.

Annual equine dental visits from your vet, including a thorough oral health examination and tooth floating (if necessary), help to ensure optimal dental health for your horse.

  • Equine Eye Care

Our Union City vets provide diagnosis and treatment for minor eye injuries and disorders seen in horses. Once we've assessed their needs we will recommend a course of treatment.

If your horse sustains an eye injury that extends beyond the scope of our abilities, we will be sure to refer your equine companion to a board-certified veterinarian and will work closely with them to ensure that your horse is getting the best possible care.

Diagnostic Testing

After a comprehensive physical exam, we may need to conduct a series of more in-depth diagnostic testing in order to help your veterinarian to determine the specific cause of your horse

Many health issues will affect our equine patients in different ways, whether they be lameness or an internal medicine condition. We work together and with you in order to determine the best treatment option for your horse.

If your equine vet has cause for concern based on initial examination, they may recommend further tests like blood or urine analysis, tissue sample, endoscopies and more

Diagnostic Imaging

If your horse is suffering from an injury, health issue, or lameness, your veterinarian may recommend digital X-rays, or ultrasounds to help them to get a clear view of the issue in order to form a diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan.
